Summary

Families of MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA continue to meet with the National Roundtable to discuss directly with provincial and territorial leaders their recommendations for achieving justice and ending violence towards Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA peoples.

Both prevention and awareness approaches are needed to address the social and economic inequalities for Indigenous peoples that are part of the root causes of violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA peoples. Preventing violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA peoples requires improving fair access to a range of systems, including health, education, healing and employment, for all Indigenous peoples, as well as more immediate actions to make Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA safer. Moreover, greater social awareness regarding the issue of MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA is needed. We must also aim to continue our journey towards truth and (re)conciliation, making clear that the responsibility of ending this violence towards Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA peoples is collectively held by all people in Canada.
